I think your biggest problem is judgement (and I'm not trying to be incriminating here). In eve you must be able to judge the situation that you're putting yourself in. This means that you need to be able to plan things out and need to have the background information before you decide to do anything. This alone will save you a ton of isk/time later.
Also, if you think you have it hard, consider this. When I made my main in 2005, you finished the tutorial with about 100k isk and 80k skillpoints (not 800k like you get now). I ran level 1 missions in a noob ship for a week with the default fittings just to get enough cash to buy some non-civilian fittings because lvl 1's back then only paid about 30k isk + bounties and salvage didn't exist yet. Got destroyed a couple of times when I mismanaged agro. Then I finally got into a Rifter and found that even with low skills lvl 1's were a lot easier but still slow to make isk. Since I didn't have the standings to use lvl 2's yet, I found a mission hub with a lot of low level agents (didn't have the "My Available Agents" on the map either, had to look at all the corporation info's and figure out where they all were) and started chain-running missions.
Once I was finally able to use level 2's I tried it out (once) in the Rifter and got vaporized when I came up against the first cruiser. So, I went back to farming level 1's for a bit, until I got enough to buy/fit/equip a Rupture, and went back to level 2's. Was pretty tight on some missions but it worked out. Got vaporized again with level 3's. So, I upgraded to a battlecruiser (cyclone) and tried it again successfully this time. By this time, I figured out that when you're moving up an agent level, it was probably a good idea to upgrade the ship class (and insure it). You get the idea.
General Rules for EvE: 1. Don't fly what you can't easily replace 2. Expect that everyone is out to get you (or your money) 3. Knowledge is power 4. Proffit!
Note: The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Eve both drives you insane and is driven BY the insane. Hope this helps!
